Cinco de Mayo

In America Cinco de Mayo is a great day for celebration. Everyone goes around saying "Happy Cinco de Mayo" and tonight will go out to eat mexican food. To us it is a big deal which creates a lot of excitement. This morning, when my Hispanic rider got into the car, I said to her "Happy Cinco de Mayo" her response was simply "I knew you would say that." I was shocked, I didn't know what to say. I questioned her about it and she said that her cousins living in Mexico do not even celebrate the day. She said it is not a holiday here nor their. I was completely shocked by this and a little disappointed, but I know that it will not keep Americans from celebrating it.

Lake Adventures

As we ride out to the lake, I have great conversations with my dad about the things going on in the world today. Launching the boat and heading out onto the water I am realizing that the water is very rough on this windy day. I am on the back deck of our boat tightening up the bindings on my favorite wake board as I stall before taking the icy plunge into the freezing water. I am standing on the sand at the lake and Danielle is showing me how to strap into my sandals on the new wake board dad promises to buy if I can learn to ride the board today. We go out into the water together and she holds the board steady as I stand on it to get a feel. I only weigh 48 pounds in my wet swimsuit, but today I get up on my first try in the open water. As soon as I hit the water I tell dad to pull me up as quickly as possible my legs are going numb. I ride many times and as we load the boat and I park it near the launch, I hear ducks quacking on the edge of the water and freeze watching them. I am sitting next to my grandmother as she rests in her wheelchair, we sit for hours in the courtyard of the nursing home and watch the ducks as they swim and quack at each other. They get out and sit on the bank, I wonder how many more times I will be able to sit with my grandmother. I continue on with unloading as I wonder how many more times I will be able to come out with my dad before it is time for me to go off to college.
Today is the first trip of the summer to the lake and although a very exciting day, I realize how things in my life continue to change. I feel anxiety about going to college and leaving everything behind that I know and love. We arrive back at the boat storage and I walk among the boats. I am walking among the boats and dripping sweat, I hold the clip board with the tags I am making on it. Mr. Free walks in and I explain to him all the work I have done. Suddenly it strikes me that he really doesn't care what I have done, I am just another summer employee. I feel so much respect for him as he is my first boss and has taught me so much about life and working. I shut the door to the boat house and climb in the car with dad. We are discussing the day at the lake when Mr. Free drives by. I zone out of the conversation with dad as I am pondering asking him for a job for this summer. I am too scared to ask him, because of asking too much from a man I never want to disappoint. We drive away and discuss what is going on in the world again.

Country Problems

"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country" -JFK
This is a great quote that goes along with many of the problems in our nation. Everyone desires for the American government to give them everything. Instead they need to look for ways for them to help better the country. The people should never depend on the country to do things for them instead of just doing it themselves.

Significance

People have claimed many different things as the most important things in life. The truth is most people are never really able to figure out what it is they are missing. People can live without being in love, people can live through hard times and the many other things that life throws at them. What people have the hardest time dealing with is when they don't feel significant. It can be not getting picked to play on the team with all the good players. It could be not getting to play at all in the biggest game of the year; or you feeling like everyone you know can survive just the same if you were no longer around. It does not matter what it is, but if something happens that makes you feel insignificant the recovery process is often slow and extremely difficult. In a relationship you have to have someone that makes you feel like you matter to them, that you are significant, whether it be with a friend or a significant other. Once you have an encounter with feeling insignificant you will never be able to look at life quite the same. Help each other, go out everyday with the goal of making as many people as you can feel significant. Afterall, the best thing in life is feeling significant and you never know who you can help that might really need it that day.

Stuck in a Tail Spin

"We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." -Ronald Reagan
The "we" in this quoteis reffering to the government. Everyone thinks that the government should be able to help them all the time. This is simply not possible for our government to do because we do not have enough personnel or financial resources. The times that worked better were when the wealthier people in the town helped to support the impoverished and no one relied on the government. This would never work now, because just as the failure in the current system too many people would try to take advantage of it and ruin the system for everyone. The key is to get rid of the people in the government programs who do not really need it.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is an extremely special day meant to be shared with that special person that you love. It is a very happy day for the many people who have someone to share it with, just being happy you have someone to be with that you are in love with. For someone in a relationship, if the guy does something special, it can be one of the best days of the year. The bad part is that single people feel very lonely on the big day.
I do not believe you can realize how sad it is to not have someone to share the day with until you have had someone and no longer do. Before you have your first Valentine with someone, you do not realize how lonely you should feel. Once you experience one while single, you realize what you had and just how lonely you are. Experiencing your first Valentine's Day with someone special is bitter sweet. It is so wonderful having someone you love to share the day with, but from then on, if you are ever single on February 14, you realize just how lonely you really are. Enjoy every Valentine's Day, because you just do not know when you might be single on the next one.
